B-hCG between 5,000 and 50,000 iU/L 2017-09-07 Kidney cancer is a diseases that starts in the kidneys. It happens when healthy cells in one or both kidneys grow out of control and form a lump (called a tumor). Studies show there is a link between kidney cancer and kidney disease. In fact, about one-third of the 300,000 kidney cancer survivors in the United States have or will develop kidney disease. In many cases, there are no obvious symptoms of kidney cancer at first and it may only be found during tests for another condition or reason. Symptoms are often similar to those of less serious conditions, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or kidney stones.

With kidney cancer, these syndromes may lead to a high calcium level in the blood, with symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, weakness, and confusion, an elevated red blood cell count (erythrocytosis), and an increase in liver function tests even when a tumor hasn't spread to the liver (Stauffer syndrome). Treatment of kidney cancer depends on the type of cancer, the type of kidney cancer cells involved, the stage of disease, and other factors.
