It happens when healthy cells in one or both kidneys grow out of control and form a lump (called a tumor). Studies show there is a link between kidney cancer and kidney disease. In fact, about one-third of the 300,000 kidney cancer survivors in the United States have or will develop kidney disease. In many cases, there are no obvious symptoms of kidney cancer at first and it may only be found during tests for another condition or reason. Symptoms are often similar to those of less serious conditions, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or kidney stones.
